From #1 New York Times bestselling author Nic Stone comes a challenging and heartwarming coming-of-age story about a softball player looking to prove herself on and off the field.

Shenice Lockwood, captain of the Fulton Firebirds, is hyper-focused when she steps up to the plate. Nothing can stop her from leading her team to the U12 fast-pitch softball regional championship. But life has thrown some curveballs her way.

Strike one: As the sole team of all-brown faces, Shenice and the Firebirds have to work twice as hard to prove that Black girls belong at bat.

Strike two: Shenice’s focus gets shaken when her great-uncle Jack reveals that a career-ending—and family-name-ruining—crime may have been a setup.

Strike three: Broken focus means mistakes on the field. And Shenice’s teammates are beginning to wonder if she’s captain-qualified.

It's up to Shenice to discover the truth about her family’s past—and fast—before secrets take the Firebirds out of the game forever.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 5-8-A sports mystery that will keep readers engaged from start to finish. "Base-related ball" runs in Shenice's blood. Her dad played, and his dad played, and now Shenice is the captain of the Fulton Firebirds, the first and only all-Black softball team in the Dixie Youth Softball Association. More than anything, she wants to prove that Black girls do belong on the field. The day after a tough loss, Shenice's father decides it's time to introduce her to her Great-Grampy JonJon's infamous trunk. The trunk holds all kinds of baseball treasures, but her father gives her JonJon's mitt and closes the trunk. Shenice is curious about other items she saw but doesn't know how to learn more about them until she discovers her Great-Grampy's brother, Uncle Jack, is still alive. When they meet, Uncle Jack tells Shenice the reason JonJon stopped playing ball: he was framed for stealing the glove of Joe DiMaggio from a charity auction. Her parents told her Uncle Jack isn't always lucid. Is the story true? Can Shenice clear JonJon's name? Discussions about race and civil rights are seamlessly woven into the narrative through Shenice's own experiences, her schoolwork, and conversations with her language arts teacher. The climax feels unnecessarily prolonged, but this may keep younger readers on the edge of their seats. Softball terminology isn't always explained, so it would benefit readers to have some background knowledge of the sport. Shenice and her softball team are making waves being the first all Black team to progress this far. She has a family legacy to uphold, from her great grandfather down to her. On top of all that, Shenice just met her great uncle who gave her a mystery to solve about how her grandfather was kicked out of his league. She can't keep her focus on softball when her grandfather's mystery keeps coming up.

Opinion

I loved this book. I was close to my grandfather and I love that Shenice was working hard to clear her grandfather's name. This was a quick and enjoyable book that any young sports fan would love.

Many thanks to Net Galley and to Random House Children's books for providing me with an ARC of this book and many apologies for taking so long to review.

Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Children’s for the review copy of this book. This was intriguing to me because I have enjoyed Nic Stone’s work in the past and I played softball in high school. Holy moly, does Nic Stone know how to write a story!

This follows Shenice Lockwood, captain of the Fulton Firebirds. The team is on the path to make history as the first team made of all-brown faces to win the U12 championship. However, Shenice’s concentration is broken by family drama. Long ago, her great, great grandfather was shunned from the major leagues when he was accused of a crime his younger brother swears he didn’t commit (and Great Uncle Jack has proof!)

Determined to solve the mystery at hand and clear her great great grandfather’s name, Shenice runs the risk of letting down her team.

Shenice is a strong and wonderful main character! I loved watching as she grew and reflected. It was really awesome to revisit a favorite character from Clean Getaway as well!

Like the author, I spent many of my childhood years on the field playing softball. That is what initially interested me in the book. In addition to the softball, the story has so many other layers to love. The interconnected plots are interesting and engaging. The family history for example, the friendships of adolescence and relationships blossoming. The character development was great. Shenice is very likeable and so is her family and friends, each with unique and endearing qualities. I like the teammates who are in Robotics. I love the robot scene! There is great dialogue and it’s meaningful! There’s adventure and a bit of mystery too! And the high stakes of it all. Overall, grand slam! Very satisfying ending!

Before heading into the homestretch of a potentially history-making softball season, team captain and catcher Shenice “Lightning” Lockwood is let in on a shameful family secret that has national implications. Determined to set her family’s reputation right while trying to juggle the pressures of her team, her family life, and a culture that sees Black girls as lesser, Shenice find that she may be in over her 12-year-old head. Inspired by The Sandlot, this is a softball story that’s about way more than softball - and Shenice’s skills are never in question. This isn’t about whether girls can play a good game, it’s about who tells the stories of how the game is played - on and off the field.

Shenice is captain of her fast-pitch softball team, the first all black team in their league. The tournament season is soon, and they could make history if they make it to the district tournament. As her team readies for this tourney, for the first time she meets her great grandfather’s brother, Jack. He tells her his brother was falsely accused of stealing Joe DiMaggio’s glove during a charity auction. He said his brother was framed, and he knows who took it and wants her to find the glove and clear his brother’s name. Can Shenice do it while trying to get her team ready for the district tournament?
