Invigorating and Creative Recipes to Ignite Your Senses

For Jerrelle Guy, food has always been what has shaped her—her body, her character, her experiences and her palate. Growing up as the sensitive, slightly awkward child of three in a race-conscious space, she decided early on that she’d rather spend her time eating cookies and honey buns than taking on the weight of worldly issues. It helped her see that good food is the most powerful way to connect, understand and heal.

Inspired by this realization, each one of her recipes tells a story. Orange Peel Pound Cake brings back memories of summer days eating Florida oranges at Big Ma’s house, Rosketti cookies reimagine the treats her mother ate growing up in Guam, and Plaited Dukkah Bread parallels the braids worked into her hair as a child.

Jerrelle leads you on a sensual baking journey using the five senses, retelling and reinventing food memories while using ingredients that make her feel more in control and more connected to the world and the person she has become. Whole flours, less refined sugar and vegan alternatives make it easier to celebrate those sweet moments that made her who she is today.

Escape everyday life and get lost in the aromas, sounds, sights, textures and tastes of
Black Girl Baking.

From the Back Cover

Jerrelle?s Honey Wheat Cinnamon Raisin Bread smells of the sweet bread her father would use to pack his lunch every morning. Her Bruleed Buttermilk Pie mimics the cracking surface of the crème brulee her great aunt used to make for her on special occasion. Drenched in imagery, these healthy recipes are like therapy, bringing the reader back in time to appreciate the simple pleasures of childhood using the five senses. Jerrelle Guy is the creator of Chocolate For Basil, a vegetarian blog that has been featured on Vogue.com, Food52 and in the Boston Globe, to name a few. Her Instagram is full of stunning photography and has over 41,000 followers. These recipes tell Jerrelle?s story while urging the reader to step away from the book and submerge themselves in the senses of baking?feel for clumps in the dough, smell when the nuts are toasted, hear the hollow knock of a perfectly cooked loaf of bread. With incredible baked goods with a soul food twist like Five Spice Baked Rice Pudding, Brown Sugar Plantain Galette, Corn and Serrano Soufflé and Sticky Date Sheet Cake, Black Girl Baking is a book to be remembered. This book will contain 75 recipes and 75 photos, each with vegan alternatives.

I've already started trying some of the recipes and I'm in love. The grits and greens soufflé I've already made several times! Most of the recipes can easily be adjusted for taste and the book doesn't over-index on the usual overpowering flavors of sugar/salt. Once or twice I thought the directions could be slightly more clear, so read through a few times before starting to know exactly what you are doing.

My husband is on highly restrictive diet and this book blew open possibilities for him.
Have been recommending watching “High on the Hog” on Netflix, purchasing this book and Jubilee.
African American history feeding your bellies, soul, and mind. Cannot say enough about how valuable these cookbooks are.
Black Girl Baking is clear, instructive, sourced, and easy to follow with brightly colored photos.
As a gourmet cook with an extensive cookbook collection including Gullah, Black Girl Baking took my collection to new heights. Mango curd has multiple uses, but how she works with veggie based substitutes is genius.

For the first time in 5 years my husband enjoyed mac and cheese (originated in Thomas Jefferson’s kitchen by his slave James Hemings) with veggie based “dairy” and some of my own creative tweaks. Baking book changed his world.
FYI: While at Rutgers (adult student) did a final paper and presentation on Gullah. My presentation included making sesame cookies/wafers for my class. A student took a bunch because his Caribbean Mom used to make them.
Watch the series and buy this book.

I first saw this young lady on the Netflix show “High on the Hog” and was very impressed with her take on food, food history and food preparation. When I found out that she had published a cookbook I decided (after much thought) to purchase it and I have not been disappointed in the book or the author. The recipes are easy and concise and the photography is gorgeous.

I really enjoy reading and rereading this book; the descriptions are lyrical and I like Jerelle’s writing style. Some recipes have been spot on for me including the crackers, the unicorn ice cream sandwiches, and a few others. Other recipes do not seem quite so reliable (e.g. the bagel recipe) in which the ratios just don’t look right. If you compare volumes and weights among the recipes, the amount of flour prescribed by weight versus by volume is inconsistent, and there’s no clear calculation she has made to indicate which one is right — I think this is what made the bagel recipe problematic. I can’t speak for other ingredients though I imagine the issue must affect other recipes, so I have some concern that not all these recipes have been thoroughly tested. This being said, if you want to get creative around baking including using inventive ingredients for traditional items, as well as be offered lots of variations on the recipes, this is a good one. It is certainly one that helps provoke thought around how and what you want to bake.

As a cookbook collector, I have returned my fair share of not-so-great books. However, right away I was mesmerized by Jerrelle’s photography and after thumbing through the recipes, I knew I needed this book. I love her spin on classics, as well as the mixture of sweet and savory. I don’t often read a cookbook author’s intro, but I thoroughly enjoyed Jerrelle’s back story. As a busy working mom, my time is short, yet I love to cook. The recipes look amazing and doable. I’m so glad I stumbled across this book. It certainly has earned its place on my shelf!

I bought this cookbook after watching the "High on the Hog" show on Netflix with Stephen Satterfield. I specifically was looking for the "brown-butter and Crown Royal whiskey apple pie" recipe she makes on the show, but unfortunately it isn't in this book. However, I am still giving this cookbook 5 stars, because I love the recipes that it does contain. I am especially excited about the smoked okra dip, the zucchini bread, and the grits & greens souffle. For those reading the other reviews, this book isn't "all" vegan - but it does offer vegan and gluten-free or egg-free OPTIONS, not requirements, OPTIONS. So you can make it the way you want to if you are not vegan, etc. BTW If anyone finds that apple pie recipe though, please DO pass it along. Thank you so much!

This book is written with light stories that are down to earth relatable, touching with a hint of humor. The comforting recipes that may be familiar to many are available with gluttenfree and /or vegan options. Recipes are easy enough not to fear, with clear instructions that you can almost taste by looking at the pictures of the finished dishes. Whether sweet or savory you will not be disappointed. Black Girl Baking has it all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, unusual recipes, great for vegan/semi-vegan cooks as well as anyone else!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 2, 2021
There are many, many things to love about this book.

I really liked the fact that although this isn't a cookbook that's for any specific special diet, almost all of the recipes are either naturally vegan or can be easily made vegan/dairy free with simple adaptations, and the author clearly has an excellent understanding of vegan baking.

The chapters are based on different senses, rather than the standard "bread, biscuits, cakes..." format of most baking books. This is a lovely idea and done REALLY well - so well that I can't imagine the book being set out in any other way.

The recipes range from more complex things that you'd choose to make when you're in the mood for taking your time over baking something, to things you make when your aim is to get something baked as soon as possible with what you already have in the cupboards. It's nice to have this variety - and some of the recipes are downright deliciously trashy (for want of a better word - this is definitely not an insult!) for when you're in the kind of mood where you want to relive slightly fancier versions of unhealthy nostalgic things from your childhood (rice crispie cakes with bourbon brown butter!).

The whole book is a fantastic variety of flavours and textures, and there's virtually nothing that made me think "I already know how to make that". There are variations on classics (more familiar to Americans than Brits like me, I suspect), and some completely unique recipes and combinations of flavours and ingredients that I would have never thought of before. Some recipes are healthier, some less so. It has everything. Interesting breads, healthy(ish) snacks, fancy desserts, sweet things, savoury things...there's something for everyone and every occasion.

The author's love of baking really shines through, as does her clear fascination with different flavours, ingredients, textures and cooking methods, and she takes inspiration from all areas of her family background, different places she's lived, and different people she's cooked with. I really enjoyed reading through it and marking out the things I'd like to make, but I shouldn't have bothered with all of the bookmarks because in the end I wanted to make pretty much everything!
