Product Description

A uniquely prolific and chameleonic figure of world cinema, Kon Ichikawa delivered a burst of stylistic bravado with this intricate tale of betrayal and retribution. Set in the cloistered world of nineteenth-century kabuki theater, the film charts a female impersonator s attempts to avenge the deaths of his parents, who were driven to insanity and suicide by a trio of corrupt men. Ichikawa takes the conventions of melodrama and turns them on their head, bringing the hero s fractured psyche to life in boldly experimental widescreen compositions infused with kaleidoscopic color, pop-art influences, and meticulous choreography. Anchored by a magnificently androgynous performance by Kazuo Hasegawa, reprising a role he had played on-screen three decades earlier, An Actor's Revenge is an eye-popping examination of how the illusions of art intersect with life.

Ichikawa supposedly made this movie "to see what cinema could do." He pulls out all the stops and the result is a masterpiece of visual splendor, wit and style that is stunning as well as very entertaining. The story of a man taking revenge against the people who killed his parents is an old cliched melodrama that was assigned to Ichikawa by the film studio. Supposedly the studio was punishing him because his previous films were not commercial enough. But Ichikawa turns necessity into a virtue by glorifying the kitsch while at the same time keeping an ironic stance.

Ichikawa uses the widescreen to full effect in adopting the aesthetics of the Kabuki theater. The sheer visual inventiveness of the movie makes for the best kind of eye candy. There are bold splashes of primary colors and dramatic, very theatrical lighting. Some sets are intentionally artificial-looking while others are not. Somehow the two styles don't clash but instead portray the perfect intermingling of theater and cinema. Similarly, the use of jazz and lounge music(!) seem perfectly appropriate.

Hasegawa, the lead actor, played the same role in a previous version of the movie nearly 30 years earlier. A man who acts like a woman (both on-stage and off), seducing a woman young enough to be his daughter lends a touch of the bizarre which just makes things more interesting. The movie is graced by Ayako Wakao, at the height of her beauty.

A solid script and a good plot and very good theme. Excellent filmmaking shot entirely inside the studio. Though the male lead actor Kazuo Hasegawa is kind of a miscast for his age. Nevertheless they are all good actors performing well. Hasegawa plays two character here and played the thief character better. Shintaro Katsu (Zatoichi) and Raizo Ichikawa (Sleepy Eyes of Death/ Shinobi no Mono) also appears in cameo roles. A very Shakespearean ending.
A Collector's item.

I cannot wait to see this wonderful, totally original and captivating movie On Blu Ray. My rating is for the movie as I’ve yet to see what Criterion releases, but as I have never been disappointed by any of their releases, I’m sure my rating will not change.

The greatest difficulty for the viewer is in deciding how to take this film. The story at its most basic is this: a kabuki actor famed for playing women finds the three men who drove his father to madness and his mother to suicide. Bent on revenge he takes advantage of the love of the daughter of one of these men and turns the men against eachother until, in the end all three are dead as is the daughter. Having never wanted to have taken this revenge and grieved at the death of the daughter, the actor leaves and is never seen again. However we are not meant to be emotionally rapt through all of this. There is a backing cast of wacky and sometimes noble characters, mostly theives, that bring a great bit of light humour into the mix. As it is, we must take it as neither drama nor comedy, but something approximating both. It is no masterpiece of cinema, but it ends up being a very enjoyable film to watch. The lighting and cinematographical technique used throughout is very impressive. It creates a dramatic setting similar to the stage on kabuki company performs their fanciful dramas. This film too is another fanciful production.

I love Japanese films and this is a great one. Kon Ichikawa's masterpiece. Starring veteran Kazuo Hasegawa as a female impersonator (an onnagata) in the kabuki theatre who plans his revenge on the 3 men who caused his father's death. A must see. A rare look at the world of kabuki.

Movie Buff
5.0 out of 5 stars One man standing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 11, 2012
I have a great affection for all Japanese classic directors like Kurosawa, Mizoguchi, Ozu, Naruse, Kinoshita. This was the first movie I saw directed by Kon Ichikawa. When I say one man standing alone I surely can say that Ichikawa's vision is unique with this movie. The story revolves around the revenge of a kabuki actor to the people who harmed his family both his mother and father. Long has he waited for the moment and the means to reach his purpose is no more no less than cruel to these people. The background of the movie is the late 19th century. The artist tools by Kon Ichikawa are foremost majestic: starting with an amazing ever speaking lighting on the set, to the design of the sets, colors and concluding with the cinematography. The final wrapped product is an ode to the Japanese theater kabuki and to one of the oldest and experienced actors Kazuo Hasegawa, who accomplished with this film his 300th role. He plays two characters in the movie: the women impersonator and one of the thieves that are fighting to help the poor survive the lack of food.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous, formal, mannered and mischievous kabuki-based plot tangle
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 26, 2021
This highly mannered, whimsical view of Japan's kabuki scene in the Edo era will probably be baffling to many viewers - especially the idea that an ageing leading man whom Western fans may not find especially dazzling to look at can break hearts as a player of female beauties in the single-sex kabuki theatre. But accept that convention, dive into the convoluted plot and just enjoy an experience totally outside Western film or theatrical convention. Our nearest parallel is probably pantomime, but it doesn't come close. For one thing, panto is rarely lit so atmospherically.

5.0 out of 5 stars visual feast
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 14, 2009
As the film notes say, this was a bizarre project - a remake of a 1935 film, with the actor Hasegawa playing the same roles 30 years later.. both a kabuki female impersonator and a thief. The main story is a tragedy (look out for the Garden of Gethsemane moment)interwoven with a comedy sub-plot.
Don't expect realism - there is a strong theatrical feel to the visuals, which I think works extremely well with the plot/subject matter, and there is much hamming up in the comedy acting. Given a difficult task, director Kon Ichikawa constructed a highly creative, somewhat surreal solution, within which there are some intensely moving moments.
I found this film stunning to watch; some of the scenes reminded me of Japanese prints, and I had to watch it again the next day, pausing it frequently just to take in the costumes and sets. Even the make-up and facial expressions echo the actor prints of the early 19th century.
