Reflections on America and the American experience as he has lived and observed it by the bestselling author of The Greatest Generation, whose iconic career in journalism has spanned more than fifty years

From his parents’ life in the Thirties, on to his boyhood along the Missouri River and on the prairies of South Dakota in the Forties, into his early journalism career in the Fifties and the tumultuous Sixties, up to the present, this personal story is a reflection on America in our time. Tom Brokaw writes about growing up and coming of age in the heartland, and of the family, the people, the culture and the values that shaped him then and still do today.

His father, Red Brokaw, a genius with machines, followed the instincts of Tom’s mother Jean, and took the risk of moving his small family from an Army base to Pickstown, South Dakota, where Red got a job as a heavy equipment operator in the Army Corps of Engineers’ project building the Ft. Randall dam along the Missouri River. Tom Brokaw describes how this move became the pivotal decision in their lives, as the Brokaw family, along with others after World War II, began to live out the American Dream: community, relative prosperity, middle class pleasures and good educations for their children.

“Along the river and in the surrounding hills, I had a Tom Sawyer boyhood,” Brokaw writes; and as he describes his own pilgrimage as it unfolded—from childhood to love, marriage, the early days in broadcast journalism, and beyond—he also reflects on what brought him and so many Americans of his generation to lead lives a long way from home, yet forever affected by it.

From the Inside Flap

In A Long Way from Home, Tom Brokaw describes his childhood and youth in South Dakota, and the people and places in the American heartland of the 1940s and 1950s that continue to shape his life today. As he reflects on the American experience as he lived and observed it during the central decades of the twentieth century, Brokaw writes of his parents? lives during the Great Depression, his boyhood along the Missouri River, the happy days of his adolescence in Yankton, and his early years in broadcast journalism on the cusp of the turbulent 1960s. As he recounts his own American pilgrimage, Tom Brokaw also explores what brought him and so many Americans to lead lives a long way from home, yet forever affected by it.

This was a captivating glimpse into the transformation of the the young Tom Brokaw into the man we all admire today. It is an easy read which was impossible to put down. We thoroughly enjoy reading it and discussing the contents. Tom is a gifted story teller and fine man. He was not at all shy about pointing out his own early mistakes and did it in an entertaining manner. In short, we loved it.

When I first read this book I was very unhappy with it because Tom Brokaw described his life as a happy, ambitious one. He was describing the life of a privileged white boy of the 1950s. Since I was female of the same time, I could not appreciate the story and stopped reading it. Later on I came back to it and discovered he could be serious and he understood those of us who were left behind.

I had finished reading The Time of Our Lives and came across A Long Way from Home. I couldn't put it down as I could relate to so very much of what Brokaw described in this book. He grew up in very small towns in South Dakota during and following World War II. I grew up in a small town in central Montana. Brokaw's parents were very frugal, as were mine, by necessity. Brokaw had aunts who worked in a creamery; my father was a butter maker in a creamery for 40 years. Brokaw now owns a ranch in Montana. He is such a down-to-earth journalist and writer. I also enjoy seeing him on Morning Joe and The Today Show on NBC. Anyone who wants to learn more about this very successful news anchor and journalist can find an excellent account of his early life in this small volume.

This narrative rings so true, I can almost see the people, places, and events Mr. Brokaw describes. And I challenge anyone to read this and not hear his voice in your head while doing so.

Brokaw gives a seemingly honest and direct account of his formative years. His respect and admiration for his parents gives him guidelines for a life in the limelight where it may be easy to loose one's footing.

It is interesting to get a glimpse of the life in the heartland of the U. S. in the forties and fifties when so much of my own perception of the U. S. from a Scandinavian viewpoint was formed.

Congratulations to Tom Brokaw for a fine book!

My husband also has multiple myeloma and this book has helped him to get through it. He is inspired by Tom Brokaw. He also knew the side effects he was experienced were not uncommon. It has helped him to maintain his energy and keep a positive attitude throughout.

Tom Brokaw has an easy, interesting, and comfortable writing style. As an old South Dakota boy myself, I can relate to much of what he writes about, however, any comparison ends there.
