Purchase options and add-ons

The first in a series of small-format publications devoted to single bodies of work, Fire from the Sun highlights Michaël Borremans’s new work, which features toddlers engaged in playful but mysterious acts with sinister overtones and insinuations of violence.

Known for his ability to recall classical painting, both through technical mastery and subject matter, Borremans’s depiction of the uncanny, the perhaps secret, the bizarre, often surprises, sometimes disturbs the viewer. In this series of work, children are presented alone or in groups against a studio-like backdrop that negates time and space, while underlining the theatrical atmosphere and artifice that exists throughout Borremans’s recent work. Reminiscent of cherubs in Renaissance paintings, the toddlers appear as allegories of the human condition, their archetypal innocence contrasted with their suggested deviousness.

In his accompanying essay, critic and curator Michael Bracewell takes an in-depth look into specific paintings, tackling both the highly charged subject matter and the masterly command of the medium. He writes, “The art of Michaël Borremans seems always to have been predicated on a confluence of enigma, ambiguity, and painterly poetics—accosting beauty with strangeness; making historic Romanticism subjugate to mysterious controlling forces that are neither crudely malevolent nor necessarily benign.” Published on the occasion of Borremans’s eponymous exhibition at David Zwirner in Hong Kong, this publication is available in both English-only and
bilingual English/traditional Chinese editions.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“...will make you want to curl up in a ball and weep. It is difficult to concentrate on the weight of the artist’s brushstrokes when such a scene is staring you in the face.” -- José Da Silva ― The Art Newspaper

About the Author

Michaël Borremans's innovative approach to painting combines technical mastery with subject matter that defies straightforward interpretation. His charged canvases address universal themes that seem to resonate with a specifically contemporary relevance. The artist was born in 1963 in Geraardsbergen, Belgium and in 1996 he received his M.F.A. from Hogeschool voor Wetenschap en Kunst, Campus St. Lucas, in Ghent. Borremans continues to live and work in Ghent.

This is just gross.
It’s obvious what agendas are being pushed. This isn’t in a balenciaga AD for no reason. How is this even legal? Oh I know that damn court case , you know the one that was trying to make rules more relaxed on child porn especially in the form of art, which was ALSO featured in a Baalenciaga AD minus well spell it that way bc they are exposed now. The society we live in is disgusting and mask are falling while eyes are opening. Cancel all in association.

This book, though small, is not pornogaphic or satanic at all. It is not sunshine and P.C. comfortable rainbows of pixy dust... It's art, and likely not made to make people comfortable, but to provoke emotions and, or thoughts. If you need good feels, Bob Ross is absolutely fantastic!
Good prints, quality paper, for the price it's definitely worth the purchase.

I love this book. It brings conflicting elements of childhood innocence with sinister implied acts. It's provocative and engaging. I'm an animal rights conceptual artist and I find inspiration in it's content.

These are CONCEPTUAL PAINTINGS, boiled all the way down they are depictions of toddlers playing. The children are not disturbed or distressed in any way and, in fact, many appear to be enjoying themselves. They are painted naked, however the artist made the decision to not paint the genitalia of the children, purposefully making them both sexless and genderless. This book is obviously not child pornography in any shape or form. Furthermore it is not made known to us what the children are covered in or what they are playing with, they could be very well a group of children playing in the mud. Due to this fact, anyone who looks at these paintings and sees cannibalism or satanic rituals taking place, those ideas and images are coming from YOUR own mind, not the artist’s. This book contains a number of beautifully deep and meaningful images about the innocence of children. The title “Fire from the Sun” is also meaningful: the sun is a heavenly body and without it we could not survive, but at the same time the sun is fire and fire can burn you. The same is true of the children depicted in these paintings, they are meant to be reminiscent of Sistine style cherubs, which used to be a very commonplace theme in many works of art both religious and not (the cherubs in these arts were also often naked babies with wings, however the artists back then actually chose to depict the genitals of the babies, which again Borremans chose not to paint the genitals), furthermore these cherub-style toddlers in this book appear to be covered in blood and playing with fire, which speaks to the destructive nature of children even as they are too innocent to understand the destruction. Finally the children seem to disappear and fade away in some of the paintings which may speak to the fact that they are too young to remember or comprehend what they have done, effectively they fade out of the scene just as their memories of whatever has taken place fade away as well. Borremans had no say in his art being displayed in Balenciaga ads and wasn’t even asked about it before hand, what Balenciaga is doing is horrific but there is absolutely no need to go after one of the greatest impressionists of our time.

Just the natural evolution of Capitalism. Sacrificing the bodies of children to make a quick buck. You reap what you sow if you believe in free markets then you should not have any problems with this unless you are just a hypocrite. This should be regulated just like anything else in any market that harms human life. Just what happens when money becomes your God.

Stay away from it - I never bought but saw some pictures. Even after several days, I was still shaken by the amount of graphic pictures and paintings of children in blood and pain. Amazon to be ashamed for selling something so low !!!

Stop the exploitation of children. This book camouflage as art displaying innocent children should be banned. Children should not be drawn in this disturbing manner—this satanic ideology attempting to condition children's minds will never be the new norm. Amazon, you are better than this dark, cruel, violent, offensive art. Please halt all sales.

I would never own this book, but I have see a number of the "works of art" contained therein. The children, many of whom appear distressed or in pain, are shown covered in blood and handling severed limbs. Most importantly, who are the parents of these children who were allowed to model for this "art"? This is not art, it's abuse. Law enforcement should be investigating the creator of this book and the parents of these children!
