On October 7, 1998, a young gay man was discovered bound to a fence in the hills outside Laramie, Wyoming, savagely beaten and left to die in an act of hate that shocked the nation. Matthew Shepard’s death became a national symbol of intolerance, but for the people of Laramie the event was deeply personal, and it’s they we hear in this stunningly effective theater piece, a deeply complex portrait of a community.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Moises Kaufman and his Tectonic Theater Project have written a play documenting the aftermath of the savage killing of Matthew Shepard, including the perspectives of both friends and strangers: The Laramie Project. This innovative theatrical composition, structured not in scenes, but in "moments," addresses the various issues relating to the tragedy of Shepard, a young gay man whose murder has since become a symbol for America's struggle against intolerance. Kaufman's approach is actor-based, as opposed to text-based; a side-effect of this actor-based approach is that in print form it seems as though something is missing. However, the play promises to move the reader with its authentic portrayal of a small town facing a terrifying event.

From School Library Journal

Adult/High School-This remarkable play takes the form of a series of juxtaposed monologues, culled from hundreds of interviews that the authors conducted with residents of Laramie, WY, after the fatal beating of Matthew Shepard in 1998. Additional speeches are taken from journals the authors kept while they were involved in this project. From these fragments, a powerful whole is created, giving readers and audiences a full and shimmering picture of a quiet town suddenly thrust into the media spotlight and hastily branded as "backward." Shepard's friends are heard from, as are the friends of his convicted killers. Masterfully woven together to breathtaking effect are statements from Laramie's religious leaders-some of whom condemn the murder, others of whom condemn the victim. A thoughtful and moving theatrical tour de force.

Matthew Shepard was about two months short of his twenty-second birth when he was robbed, beaten, tied to a fence post and left to die in a rural area of Wyoming. The man who found him at first thought he was a scarecrow. Rushed to Poudre Valley Hospital at Fort Collins, he died on 12 October 1998--and when Russell Henderson and Aaron McKinney were arrested for the crime they resorted to a defense known as "gay panic." Matthew Shepherd had propositioned them, they said, and they were so horrified that they killed him in response.

The gay community and numerous civil rights watchdog groups were outraged by the defense, and as more and more facts came to light it seemed that the crime was somewhat more complicated than Henderson and McKinney wanted the public to know. Witnesses stated that Henderson and McKinney had specifically targeted Shepherd because he was gay. After much legal wrangling, Henderson pled guilty and testified against McKinney, who was convicted; after still more legal wrangling, and at the request of Shepherd's parents, McKinney escaped the death penalty but has no chance of parole.

The case made headlines from end of the United States to the other and prompted numerous calls for Hate Crimes legislation, which had long been stalled both at the state and federal level. And in the midst of the confusion, chaos, and controversy, Moises Kaufman and the members of The Tectonic Theatre Project arrived on the scene, interviewing more than two hundred people about their thoughts and feelings on the case. These were shaped into THE LARAMIE PROJECT, a drama that debuted in 2000 and which has since shocked, impressed, and deeply moved audiences from coast to coast.

Playscripts are not really intended to be read; they are intended to be performed, and there can be a significant difference between how a script and how it plays. This is particularly true of THE LARAMIE PROJECT, which doesn't consist of scenes or acts but of "moments"--bits and pieces of monologue and dialogue and staging that non-play-readers will likely find difficult to envision. When performed, all those bits and pieces become like tiles in a mosaic: they may seem to mean different things individually, but when performed one right after another they become a unified whole.

Perhaps the single most impressive thing about THE LARAMIE PROJECT is its refusal to "take sides." The play presents its characters and their words with commenting in favor of them or against them; you are instead allowed to interpret for yourself. The result is uniquely powerful. Strongly recommended.

I bought this to read prior to watching the DVD of the Laramie Project, to compare, and was glad I did. It carry's as much if not more of the drama and weightiness of the subject matter, the killing of Matthew Shepard in 1998.

An easy and quick read, it helped me identify the characters later on the DVD, and though in stage format, doesn;t read like a novel. I finsihed it in one afternoon, and if this horrific incident still concerns you, this is a good way to understand how it affected so many in a sparsly populated "city" in a huge mostly unpopulated state.

Hate knows no boundaries, but how it affected Laramie, is well done with an unusual idea. It took great courage to do this project, and shouold be more widely read, if not required reading, for schools.

I picked this script up already having known to some extent the story of Matthew Shepard and was interested in reading this play. I quickly fell in love with the style in which it was written; this usage of "moments" driven by quotations from real people is strikingly poignant and very unique. Its delivery is relatively unbiased and gives some insight as to the person that Matthew was and the tragedy that took place.
The play itself is deeply moving altogether and a very relevant piece today. I recommend this masterpiece to anyone whether or not they know who Matthew was, and whether or not they are in or are involved in the LGBTQI community. I highly recommend also seeing a performance of the show if possible; it's incredible.

I was vaguely familiar with the story prior to reading the script, but reading it gave me a whole new appreciation of how the events unfolded and impacted the entire community of Laramie.

For tears and tears and tears... I caught this off of my sister's bookshelf and she had told me about it years ago, but I never looked into it until I was on a month's vacation up north with her. Thought I'd span the little big out for a bit, but the damn thing entranced me. I could NOT put it down. I didn't WANT to! The tortured souls explored in this play are exquisite and emotionally compelling. I cried long and hard throughout the entire thing. The best part is when the doctor is describing Aaron and Matthew being in the hospital together... such a difficult read due to the emotions, but an overwhelmingly fantastic true life story about what happens when a town realizes it's own sins.

Sad statement on hatred in this country. Fueled by leaders who are not worth the space they take up on earth

Hope this will shed more light on issues faced by minority groups.

We purchased this play because my son's High School principal decided not to allow the theater teacher to put it on at his school without even bothering to read the play before making this decision!!! Moreover, the principal essentially threatened to fire the teacher if the issue was pursued. We wanted to share this play with as many people as possible after that incident and so have been loaning it to friends, relatives, other teachers, anyone willing to read it. It is truly an important work, putting a human face on the people of Laramie, Wyoming. What happened there could happen anywhere, and we not only shouldn't, but can't, hide these difficult truths.

I was surprised when I read The Laramie Project; I felt such a wide range of emotions -- fear, grief, outrage, hope. I met unexpected heroes and villains who are all too human. I had never seen this play, so I responded to it as text ... and found it to be brilliant. I am now writing lesson plans to teach this play to my senior high school students. Like all great literature, The Laramie Project is about our shared humanity.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Extraordinary, Heartfelt Read

The Laramie Project is a play that attempts to examine the aftermath in Laramie, Wyoming, of murdered college student, Matthew Shephard.

I basically bought this to use as a case study for an upcoming college exam in moral Theology. The play covers many of the issues I intend to focus on ie. Murder, Human Rights, The Death Penalty and the HIV/AIDs problem.

The beautiful thing about this play is that it is authentic. The words within it are real, spoken by real people of the town of Laramie. Moreover, the people themselves come from all walks of life - whether they be ranchers, ministers, college students or bartenders - everybody has a story to tell!

Overall, the play is an extraordinary, heartfelt read and I say this because you can 'feel' the words impact on your mind as they are read. The speakers are real, so you get the sense of grieving with the residents and trying to come to terms with such a horrible crime.

Buy it. Money well spent.

Also, do check out the HBO produced film, The Laramie Project... it is almost word-for-word like this play.

I read this after my friend told me about his performance in it and how the cast got so emotionally invested in it, so I had to give it a go. To say the least, it holds a mirror to contrasting beliefs, and surfaces the notion of acceptance and tolerance towards homosexuality in the world in a gripping, intriguing style. 10/10
