Ebony Funeral Home

Several years ago, this funeral home in Morganton, North Carolina received an unannounced visit from the State Board of Funeral Service after a customer complained. Their job is to implement the provisions of the Funeral Service Law to protect life and health and regulate the practice of embalming, funeral directing, and the care of dead human bodies. During their investigation, authorities noted used instruments and equipment in the embalming room had not been cleaned. Items like bloody sheets and dirty gowns were not disposed of properly. Also, the embalming room itself appeared to have not been properly cleaned in quite some time. A sheriff that accompanied the funeral officials into the funeral home later told a curious neighbor the embalming room resembled a slaughterhouse.

However, that is not all that the state uncovered during their visit. Once authorities began researching the funeral home’s finances, more questions arose. An audit revealed missing and unaccounted for financial documents. The funeral home’s owner was ordered to appear at a hearing before the state board to answer questions regarding the funeral home’s records as well as resolve the initial complaint. No one representing the funeral home ever showed for the hearing. Instead, the owner shuttered the building and left the city.

Ultimately, the state board decided to revoke all the funeral home’s permits and the owner’s license. The business was ordered to pay a hefty fine and reimburse the state the cost of the investigation and the hearing. The owner never appealed the state’s decision. The property was later purchased by Cody McCain Sr. and reopened as McCain Funeral Home.
