Get involved with the Young Authors’ Book Project!
We are thrilled to announce the 2020 Young Authors’ Book Project (YABP). The YABP is one of our most in-depth tutoring experiences, and it’s a chance for tutors to form meaningful, one-on-one connections with students as they become published authors over the course of five weeks.
This year we’re partnering with Ms. Reyes at Mission High School. Students in her twelfth grade Ethnic Studies classes will be grappling with themes from Nikky Finney’s “The Battle of and for the Black Face Boy.” Tutors will be helping students to write, revise, and polish poems, letters, and narratives related to race in America.
We ask all tutors to commit to a regular schedule for the 5 weeks/10 sessions of this project. There are two classes that we are recruiting tutors for. All tutors will get to work one-on-one with a student during the class(es) they chose.
Wednesdays and Fridays, January 10 – February 14
Class 1: 8:20 – 9:50 a.m.
Class 2: 12:20 – 1:50 p.m.
Please sign up for every session individually (8:20 – 9:50 and/or 12:20 – 1:50 session) on both Wednesdays and Fridays (10 sessions total, with Friday, January 24 off for Lunar New Year). If you know that you’ll have to miss a session, please sign up for it anyway to hold your place, and email ryan@826valencia.org
Finally, new tutors are required to attend an orientation on Tuesday, January 7 from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. at 826 Valencia (Tenderloin Center). All tutors for this project are required to attend a project-specific orientation on Tuesday, January 7 from 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. If you cannot attend this training, please contact ryan@826valencia.org
