Every college football season sees some teams take significant leaps forward, but the sport is a zero-sum game, so every program's improvement comes with regression for another. While numerous teams appear poised to inch closer to College Football Playoff contention, some of last year's conference frontrunners wil, in turn, pick up a few more losses.

Conference realignment, coaching changes and transfer portal departures hit some schools harder than others. Rebuilding from those factors often takes more than one season. Expectations for the teams who endured particularly difficult offseasons should be tempered until they prove otherwise.

No team is immune to a step backward every now and then, and reigning national champion Michigan is no exception. The Wolverines not only have to replace numerous NFL-bound starters from last year's title winning squad, but they also have a new head coach in Sherrone Moore. Programs of this caliber, though, often have the resources necessary to prevent major dips in success from one year to the next.
