Some cities inspire more easily than others when it comes to calling on your inner Casanova. In Salt Lake City, you don't have to go far and it's not too difficult to uncover a multitude of date ideas for pleasing your mate with the perfect romantic outing. Having trouble getting started? This romantic itinerary will guide you on a special day to remember. Your sweetheart will be left impressed, cozying up to you and anticipating the next jaunt you might have in store.
First, arrive in your carriage to pick up your Cinderella (or Prince Charming, as the case may be) bright and early. Come on. Go with the flow and get in the spirit here! Of course, it never hurts to present your loved one with a fresh blossom to start the day with a smile.
Pull up to The Grand America Hotel in downtown Salt Lake, and whisk your mate inside for a lovely breakfast accompanied by live piano at the Garden Cafe. During the holidays, admire the incredibly crafted gingerbread house created by the executive pastry chef and his team. Peruse the whimsical displays in the retail shop windows inside the hotel, or choose to show your cultural side by admiring the priceless artwork and antiques found on the property. Next, jump in the car for a dose of nature and awe-inspiring views. Show off Salt Lake's namesake and head northwest to the Great Salt Lake.
Drive across the causeway bridge to Antelope Island, where you will most likely come face to face with one of the many bison living here. Bighorn sheep, mule deer and pronghorn antelope are other inhabitants you might encounter. Pelicans, egrets, heron and other migratory birds can be spotted near the causeway.
Take in the stillness and solitude and the Lake's glass-like water (not all is frozen, due to the abundance of salt). If it's not too cold, then take the relatively easy hike to the top of Buffalo Point, where you can catch some beautiful panoramic views. You may not see another person out here on some winter days, unlike in the touristy summer months. Antelope Island in the winter — Photo courtesy of Antelope Island State Park
From here, keep the car heater going and the surprises coming. Head to the Utah State Capitol, a quite beautiful and impressive building. Run up the stairs where you can state your own Declaration of Non-independence and present your historical speech from a scroll, tied with a ribbon to give to your mate as a souvenir. It's probably time now for a bite and getting warmed up again. Find coziness and dark handsome decor in the inviting downtown restaurant Pallet Bistro. Sit over on the far wall, with the beautiful decor pillows at your back. The rustic sentiment (old typewriters, books, ceiling fans and antique fixtures) will charm you and your companion. Hop over to nearby City Creek Center for a beautiful holiday experience. This mall, with its retractable roof and creek running through it, is one of the largest of its kind, with a pedestrian sky bridge taking shoppers over the city streets below.

The lights, Christmas trees and decorations will most definitely put you and your loved one in the holiday spirit. Say "hi" to Santa there! Be sure to stop in the center of it all, at the fountain, with its synchronized-to-music shoots of water, accompanied by amazing bursts of flames. Window shop the famous Tiffany & Co. Getting any ideas?
Walk just across the street for a lovely dinner at the top of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building at The Roof restaurant. Be sure to request a window seat ahead of time when making reservations. The view of Salt Lake Temple at night is beautiful. Enjoy a gourmet buffet of soups, salads, prime rib, ham and many choices for dessert. Cap off the evening with a romantic carriage ride through downtown to see the Christmas light displays. Blankets are provided, but dress warmly. The stop is located at the south gate of Temple Square.
For those more serious or committed couples, plan a romantic overnight stay at the Hotel Monaco. You'll find sexy, hip rooms and a variety of romance packages, like the more daring "Don't Come a Knockin," which includes fuzzy handcuffs, an intimacy kit, bottle of wine and late 2 p.m. checkout.
Enjoy your very special day with your sweetheart in Salt Lake City, Utah.
