Avenida da Liberdade has been described as Lisbon’s Champs Élysées, lined as it is with fashionable shops and classy hotels. At the top of the boulevard is the landmark Marquês de Pombal roundabout and the Parque Eduardo VII. Estefânia is a largely residential neighbourhood but still full of local flavour.
See & Do
Perhaps the most notable attraction is Avenida da Liberdade itself. This is Lisbon’s principal thoroughfare, a wide, tree-lined boulevard comprising many late 19th-century buildings, plus one or two stunning Art Nouveau properties. The avenue leads north to Marquês de Pombal roundabout set at the foot of Parque Eduardo VII. The park is known for its estufas (cool greenhouse and hot greenhouse). These glasshouses date from 1910 and are open to the public.
Eat
The best restaurants in these neighbourhoods tend to be those integrated into five-star hotels. Open is the in-house restaurant at Inspira Santa Marta Hotel. The delicious haute cuisine is based on the flavours and textures of southern Europe. Similarly, Brasserie Flo at Tivoli Lisboa celebrates French and Portuguese gastronomy. For local flavour order chicken at Bonjardim Rei Dos Frangos. For a real splurge book a table at the gourmet restaurant Eleven.
Stay
The prestigious Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon is a short walk from Marquês de Pombal, as is its equally glamorous neighbour, Tiara Park Atlantic Lisboa. Back on the boulevard, two five-star alternatives, Tivoli Lisboa and Sofitel Lisbon Liberdade, are conveniently located for tourists. A boutique gem, Heritage Av Liberdade provides for a more intimate stay. Inspira Santa Marta Hotel, currently Lisbon’s only Green Globe certified hotel property, is tucked behind the avenue.
Shop
Rich pickings can be had for those shopping for designer goodies in Avenida da Liberdade. The boulevard is home to some of the most famous fashion brands in the world: Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Boss plus other haute couture heavyweights all have a presence here. Those with thinner wallets can still enjoy some retail therapy, with familiar high street names like Gant, Massimo Dutti wedged between the high rolling fashion houses.
