About Waimea
Famous for being the spot where Captain Cook first lighted on the Hawaiian islands, Waimea was also a long-lived sugar plantation town and a center for early Christian missionaries. It's currently a funnel for visitors to the Waimea Canyon area, Kauai's grand geological chasm. A short-lived Russian presence is marked by the ruins of Fort Elizabeth, and the village has the distinction of being the place where King Kaumuali'i, the last holdout in King Kamehameha's efforts to unite the archipelago, finally acquiesced.
