If their names alone aren’t enough to intrigue you, then head to Sandfly and Isle of Hope for the fantastic shopping, superb food and breathtaking scenery. The historic neighborhood of Sandfly has become one of the trendiest areas in town, boasting a growing number of unique shops and outstanding restaurants. Nearby Isle of Hope, a residential neighborhood perched on the Intracoastal Waterway, features magnificent 19th- and early 20th-century mansions and gorgeous live oaks.
See & Do
The dramatic oak tree-lined entry leading to Wormsloe Plantation is a favorite among photographers and was even featured prominently on the big screen in the movie The General’s Daughter. It’s worth the trip to Isle of Hope to see the mile-and-a-half-long dirt road in person. But don’t just turn around and drive out. Wormsloe, an 18th-century colonial estate, has miles of walking trails, a museum and fascinating outdoor artifacts. After exploring Wormsloe, continue on to Bluff Drive, one of the most breathtaking spots in the city. The historic street, which overlooks the Intracoastal Waterway, features magnificent mansions and unobstructed views of the Wilmington River.
Eat
From fried shrimp and barbecue beef brisket to chiles poblanos and udon noodles, foodies will have no trouble satisfying their cravings in Sandfly. Driftaway Café, an outstanding local seafood restaurant, has a great lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch menu filled with fresh and flavorful fish and shellfish. Sandfly Bar-B-Q, a small eatery that packs a big punch, serves up some of the best pulled pork, ribs, sweet potato fries and Brunswick stew in town. Sandfly is also home to Heiwa’s, a popular Japanese restaurant, and Jalapenos, a Mexican restaurant with a devoted local following.
Party
If hanging out with locals and chugging cheap beer is your speed, then drop by Sandfly Bar & Grill, an unpretentious sports bar and restaurant in the Norwood Shopping Center. The bar, which stays open late and is known for its great burgers, has pool tables and big-screen TVs and often features live entertainment. For those who are craving a cocktail and a lively atmosphere, the bar at Driftaway Café is always a great choice. In addition to serving excellent seafood and having a well-stocked bar, Driftaway features live music most weekends.
Shop
For years, shoppers in search of hip clothing and unique gift items headed to Savannah’s Historic District. Today, locals in the know flock to Sandfly, which boasts several locally owned businesses. The neighborhood’s three shopping centers feature a number of outstanding boutiques that specialize in fun and fashionable apparel, including the Pink Door, James Gunn and EJ Scandals. The area is also home to Sweet Tea Home & Gifts and Magnolia’s of Savannah, two whimsical gift shops where you’re sure to find the perfect bauble to bring back home.
