It’s official. Zunzi’s, Conquistador is one of the top three sandwiches in the United States. The delicious decision was reached by Adam Richman, the boisterous Travel Channel host with a big appetite who scoured the country looking for the tastiest thing between two slices of bread. In the end, Zunzi’s chicken Conquistador sandwich made it to the final round of the channel’s Adam Richman’s Best Sandwich in America show.
Savannah locals have long known that Zunzi’s sandwiches are the best in town. The popular takeout joint, started by Johnny and Gabriella DeBeer—a couple whose international background heavily influences the menu—offers a variety of sandwiches, in addition to appetizers and entrees.
But it was the Conquistador, a baked chicken breast served on French bread and topped with lettuce, tomatoes and Zunzi’s special sauce that grabbed the attention of Richman, the television host behind other popular Travel Channel show’s including Man v. Food and Man v. Food Nation.
You’ll undoubtedly be tempted to try the Conquistador when you head to Zunzi’s, which is located on East York Street in the heart of the Historic District. And you should. But don’t pass up Zunzi’s other delicious dishes such as the Portobello sub, falafel on pita, cottage pie and the infamous Godfather, a filling sandwich that combines the Conquistador’s delicious roasted chicken breast with the restaurant’s signature homemade sausage.
