Uncertainties about the direction of the Brazilian economy and the possibility of an early increase in interest rates in the United States (motivated by the consistent improvement in American economic indicators) triggered a demand among investors for lower risk investments like gold and dollar in 2014.
These types of investment were on the top of the asset class ranking created by Folha in December and throughout the year.
The survey already considers income after tax deduction.
Gold had an appreciation of 4.21% in December and 12.04% in 2014. Exchange-traded funds increased 4.17% and 11.99% respectively.
Fixed Income funds that vary with interest rates had an appreciation of 0.5% in December and 9.31% this year.
These funds invest in debt securities fixed in advance, which pay a fee above Brazil's basic interest Selic rate to offset the risk against fluctuations.
