Petrobras May Hire Foreign Companies to Replace Suppliers Banned After Probe

Last Tuesday (30), Petrobras reported the possibility of resorting to foreign companies to offset against the temporary ban of its 23 suppliers listed on probes conducted during the Car Wash Operation.
They are suspected of cartel ties to rig bids.
The state-run corporation decided to ban the contractors on Monday (29), including some of the country's largest companies.
The suspension is going to be held while internal commissions decide what penalties will be applied to each one of them.
According to Petrobras, the punishments against its suppliers may vary from warnings, fines, temporary or definitive suspension of registration.
The measure does not affect contracts that have already been signed and in progress. However, ongoing bids without proposals will be affected.
"Bids will be conducted according to the needs of the company", said Petrobras in a statement.
According to the state-run corporation, the permission to hire foreign companies is one of the alternatives studied to keep "competitive bidding procedures", although local requirements demanded by the government could trouble the contracts.
Two weeks ago, Petrobras President Graa Foster urged Dilma Rousseff's administration to study flexible measures to compensate the contractor's ban from the market.
The punishment had not been published yet, but it was likely to happen due to the Car Wash probe. Back then, the executive did speak about the possibility of holding international biddings.
