He’s staying put.

The Detroit Red Wings have re-signed forward Patrick Kane to a one-year contract, the club has announced.

Kane was one of the top free agents on the market last summer, but didn’t sign a deal until November 28 due to injury. the Red Wings eventually signed him to a one-year pact, where he proved he could still be a valuable contributor. Kane had 20 goals and 47 points in 50 games, giving the Red Wings a valuable scoring option despite ultimately missing the playoffs.

It was Kane’s third team in two seasons after the Blackhawks traded him to the New York Rangers ahead of the 2023 trade deadline.

Drafted first overall in 2007, Kane has built himself quite the Hockey Hall of Fame-worthy career. Taken first overall in 2007, Kane won the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year in 2007-08. He won his first Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks in 2010, scoring the championship-clinching goal against the Philadelphia Flyers. He then won the Cup again in the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season, winning the Conn Smythe. He won the Cup again two years later before winning the Hart Trophy and the Art Ross in 2016.

Throughout his 17-year NHL career, Kane has scored 471 goals and 1,284 points in 1,230 games with Chicago, New York, and Detroit.

Outside of the NHL, Kane won the Spengler Cup with HC Davos in 2013, Olympic silver medal in 2010, and bronze at both the 2007 World Juniors and 2018 World Championship. He was named MVP at the worlds thanks to a tournament-leading 12 assists and 20 points.

While Kane has slowed down in recent years, the 35-year-old is still two years removed from a 92-point season. If he can remain a legitimate scoring threat, the Red Wings could be in a good spot to make the postseason for the first time since 2016.
