Paul George Reveals ‘Dope’ Moment With Julius Erving After Philadelphia 76ers Move
Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

After choosing to leave the Los Angeles Clippers, All-Star wing Paul George went ahead and made the biggest splash in free agency by signing with the Philadelphia 76ers. Philly’s latest addition then recounted how he met one of the franchise’s best players, Julius Erving, after he made his big move.

The Sixers have landed a major free agent by signing George to a four-year, $212 million contract. The nine-time All-Star, who opted out of his contract with the Clippers, chose the Joel Embiid-led team over returning to his hometown team or the Orlando Magic.

The 34-year-old George is expected to slot in as the third star alongside Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, who made his first All-Star team last season and won the NBA’s Most Improved Player award. George had a strong 2023-24 campaign with the Clippers, averaging 22.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists while shooting 41% from 3-point range.

The addition of George gives the Sixers a formidable trio and raises expectations for the 2024-25 season, with fans hoping it can lead the team to its first NBA Finals appearance since 2001. However, George’s injury history is a concern, as he’s struggled with availability in recent seasons.

Paul George Recounts How He Met Julius Erving After Choosing the Philadelphia 76ers in Free Agency

Around a week after signing with the Sixers, George has come forth to tell his side of the story. In a video he shared on his podcast’s official YouTube page, the Philadelphia star recounted how he met Erving.

“Dr. J had a dope intro and story. He brought up how he joined the team, they ended up getting to the champion ship and lost one. Got to the championship again, lost. Got to the championship again, lost. He’s like ‘We just can’t get over the hump. Then they go ahead and trade for Moses Malone and win it. And he was like’ That was the missing piece. P, you the missing piece. So I was like man, where do I sign!” George said.

Along with meeting Erving, George will join a Philadelphia team that has been loaded with veteran talent this offseason. Sixers president Daryl Morey has been active by signing Andre Drummond and Eric Gordon.

The team will now look to build a true contender in the Eastern Conference after falling short in the playoffs last year. Add a George inspired with by meeting Erving, there’s more reason to believe next season’s iteration of the Sixers is going to be exciting.
