Could Yankees turn to Red Sox to replace Aaron Boone?

Pockets of New York Yankees fans are calling for owner Hal Steinbrenner to replace manager Aaron Boone amid the club's summer swoon.

There's no sign Steinbrenner will make such a move barring a complete collapse occurring this month, but Jimmy Hascup of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com believes there's at least some chance the Yankees could target current Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora this coming offseason.

"Crazier things have happened, but if there’s one certainty, it’s that Cora has proven to be one of the game’s best managers," Hascup explained. "Cora has a 489-410 career record that includes a World Series and two playoff appearances. But after two consecutive playoff-less seasons, Cora has the Red Sox at 49-40, beating the preseason predictions of many as Boston stayed quiet in free agency and seemed to be in a transitional year."

While Boone is in the last guaranteed year of a deal that includes a club option for 2025, Cora seemingly has bolstered his value during a contract season. Chris Cotillo of MassLive reported that "the overwhelming belief in industry circles is that [Cora] won’t return, instead hitting managerial free agency and finding a lucrative deal with a team willing to pay him a big contract."

Craig Counsell reset the market for managers when he signed a record-setting five-year, $40M deal to join the Chicago Cubs this past fall. To compare, Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe recently mentioned that Cora is making $2.75M this season as Boston's manager.

As for Boone, he's well-liked by noteworthy Yankees players such as captain Aaron Judge and guided the club to the playoffs each year from 2018 through 2022. However, the Bronx Bombers haven't appeared in a World Series since they won the 2009 Fall Classic, and they most recently dropped 16 of 22 games heading into Tuesday's series opener at the 44-46 Tampa Bay Rays.

Perhaps the All-Star break that gets underway this coming Sunday evening will give the 55-37 Yankees a needed reset that will ultimately result in them turning things around and saving Boone's job through 2025. If, however, the Yankees don't complete a trip to the World Series this fall, Steinbrenner could give Cora a call assuming the 48-year-old reaches the open market.
