Child struck by a driver while in a crosswalk recovers in Cobb County

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A child in Smyrna is recovering after a car hit him as he walked to school.

The accident happened on a crosswalk Dec. 12 at the intersection of Belmont Blvd. and Ward Street near Campbell High School.

A driver was coming down a hill when he hit the boy, Smyrna police said. Lt. Louis Defense told Channel 2′s Chris Jose the driver stopped to see if the boy was OK, and left when it appeared the boy was not hurt.

“Just going up to him and asking him if he’s OK, that’s not enough,” said Somalia Lawton, the child’s mother. “He should’ve gone into the school and said, ‘Hey, I just hit this child.’”

Lawton told Jose her son is living with autism and didn’t comprehend the situation. A school nurse called Lawton with the news.

“The first thing that came out of her mouth was, ‘Your son was hit by a car.’ And I went ballistic,” said Lawton.

Lawton said she rushed to the school and took her son to the emergency room. He’s recovering with an injured arm and several bumps and bruises.

“His arm still hurts a little bit. He still wears a sling. I’m just glad he’s with me,” said Lawton.

Police said they tracked down the driver and gave him a ticket for failing to yield to a pedestrian. Lawton wants to see him charged for hit and run and reckless driving.
