COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - A Midlands cat is recovering from a traumatic incident thanks to help of animal lovers in the community.

The cat, which has been given the name Emmy, was found at a Columbia apartment complex last week, with her face glued shut.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department is working with the local police and Human Society to find out if any foul play was involved in Emmy’s case.

Manuela Schafer, founder and CEO of the organization For the Love of Street Dogs, has volunteered to pay for all Emmy’s medical expenses.

“No animal should ever endure what Emmy endured and still has to endure. Once she can eat right on her own things will look up for her,” Schafer said in an evening update on her Facebook page.

Schafer says she was one of the women who found Emmy in her most dire state.

Schafer believes the glue-like substance found on Emmy’s body was either epoxy or paint. In her opinion, Emmy is not a feral cat.

“She was obviously owned, at one point. And probably the owner moved out and left her behind,” she said.

Once Emmy recovers, Schafer is going to help Emmy find a special, medical foster home to nurse her back to health. The young feline will need to eat through a feeding tube, Schafer said.

Emmy is being treated by the veterinarian Wynter Gantt at CVETS. According to Gantt, the feline now has an 80% chance at survival.

Schafer has been posting frequent updates on Emmy’s journey on her Facebook page, For the Love of Street Dogs. Anyone looking for information on how to support Emmy can visit the page or the organization’s website.
