10 SC towns receive state funding for water infrastructure upgrades

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - The South Carolina Department of Commerce awarded ten communities around South Carolina with more than $10.5 million total in Community Development Block Grant funds.

“The CDBG program creates infrastructure and revitalization opportunities in communities that may otherwise have limited access to funding,” said Secretary of Commerce Harry M. Lightsey III. “As South Carolina remains a leading destination for businesses and citizens alike, supporting these projects is vital to keep communities of all sizes growing and moving forward.”

The funds come from the South Carolina Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, which bi-annually awards grants to local governments for public improvement projects. The projects are meant to improve economic opportunities and meet community revitalization needs.

Three of those ten communities who received the grants were areas within the Midlands:

  • The City of Bishopville received $1 million for wastewater treatment plant improvements
  • The Town of Winnsboro received $669,035 for upgrades to Winnsboro Mills Water.
  • The City of Newberry received $1.5 million for improvements to its Bush River Wastewater Treatment Plant

Other communities who received funding were:

  • City of Bennettsville - $877,800
    • Lyall Street Water Treatment Plant Upgrade
  • Chesterfield County - $1,000,000
    • Hillian Edwards Road Water Extension
  • Dorchester County - $1,000,000
    • Stratton Capers Water Upgrade – Phase I
  • Town of Kershaw - $997,519
    • Wastewater Treatment Plant Improvements
  • Laurens County - $1,618,000
    • Clinton-Joanna WWTP Upgrade – Phase II
  • Town of Pendleton - $1,000,000
    • Village Hills Water and Sewer Upgrade
  • Town of Ridgeland - $929,285
    • Water and Sewer Upgrades

Officials said governments receiving the funds are required to provide at least a 10% match in funding to complete the projects.
