AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - In less than one week, crews fought four fires, one fatal, in South Carolina, according to authorities.

It’s officially summer and we’ve already experienced extreme heat this year. Extreme heat is dangerous, with high temperatures and humidity not only claiming more lives than other type of severe weather event in the U.S., but cause a high risk of fires. The majority of South Carolina counties are at high risk for these hazards.

North Augusta

On Thursday night, the American Red Cross disaster-trained volunteers are assisting a family whose home, located on Hutchinson Drive, was damaged by a fire.

The Red Cross is helping seven people by providing financial assistance for immediate needs such as food, clothing, and shelter, along with referrals to much needed resources.

The day before, North Augusta crews battled a house fire on East Avenue and East Pine Grove Avenue.

Crews on the scene say the call came in at 6:42 p.m. on Monday.

Crews say the fire started at the back of the home and spread to the roof.

There were no injuries reported, according to officials.

As of 8:07 p.m., crews say the fire was contained.

Saluda County

American Red Cross is helping a family after their home caught on Sunday morning, in Batesburg.

The volunteers are assisting a family whose home, located on Ready Pond Road, Batesburg, was damaged.

The Red Cross is helping three people by providing financial assistance for immediate needs such as food, clothing, and shelter, along with referrals to needed resources.

Salley

The Aiken County Coroner’s Office is investigating the death of an individual following a residential fire.

The fire was reported Friday evening around 7:13 p.m. at a residence on the 500 block of John Nunn Highway in the Salley area of Aiken County.

Law enforcement and fire department personnel responded to the house fire and after the fire was extinguished, the body of a male was found inside the home.

Due to the extensive thermal injuries, the victim was not immediately identified and will be autopsied in Newberry to determine the cause of death and to assist with a positive identification.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The Aiken County Coroner’s Office and Aiken County Sheriff’s Office are continuing with the investigation.
