COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - The state’s most recent budget granted Columbia $2.5 million for a parking garage, according to city officials.

As part of South Carolina’s most recent budget that Gov. Henry McMaster signed into law on Wednesday, the state approved a request submitted by Sen. Dick Harpootlian to construct a parking garage in Five Points.

A letter written by Columbia Mayor Daniel Rickenmann submitted as part of the proposal said that the parking garage would make way for the city to be able to attract businesses like a boutique hotel and more office and retail space.

“The parking deck will allow us to land a 150-room boutique hotel and 55,000-square feet of office space, which includes the new home of the South Carolina Bar Association,” a letter to Harpootlian from Rickenmann said. “Most importantly, this investment will heavily contribute to the re-building of one of our most iconic neighborhoods in the city.”

The proposal for the parking deck says it would contain 400 to 500 spaces.

This proposed project is the latest in a string of transformations the City of Columbia has announced for Five Points.

In April, the city began work on a new construction project to overhaul Harden Street, one of the main roads in Five Points, to improve walkability and mitigate speeding.

CORRECTION: WIS News 10 initially reported the city of Columbia received $10 million in state funds for the parking garage, hotel and office space. The $10 million figure is from the initial earmark budget request, and not the final approved number. The funding from the state is also not going directly to the hotel, which was initially reported on. This story has been updated to reflect these changes.
