Report: Man who fired shotgun in the air in Columbia says he didn’t know it was illegal

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - The Richland County Sheriff’s Department responded to an unusual shooting on the Fourth of July.

Deputies responded to Golden Court, off Meadowlake Drive, at around 1 a.m. on July 5.

A resident told deputies that their neighbor fired his shotgun into the air several times while people were shooting off fireworks for the Fourth of July.

An incident report from the department said the neighbor, Marlon Terez Mack, 21, told deputies he fired his shotgun in the air and hit a tree branch. When deputies asked him why he fired his gun, the incident report said, “[Mack] stated it was the holidays and he didn’t know it was illegal to shoot his gun into the air.”

The shotgun was taken by deputies as evidence and Mack was booked in the the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

He was charged with aggravated breach of peace.
