WALDO, Fla. (WCJB) - A Waldo man is being charged with attempted homicide after he told deputies he woke up and decided to kill his wife.

Alachua County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Rolando Perez, 52, Friday morning after they say he started choking his wife.

Deputies say they initially responded to the residence after a report of an attempted suicide.

Upon arrival, deputies say they found Perez’s wife with bruises and red marks on her neck.

She told deputies that she woke when Perez removed the blanket that was covering her.

She said Perez then sat on top of her and began to choke her, causing her to lose consciousness.

Deputies say the couple’s children heard the commotion and stopped Perez.

When the woman regained consciousness and tried to get away, she said Perez chased her and wrapped his arms around her neck, continuing to choke her. One child yelled at Perez to stop. Deputies say he did, but then walked into the kitchen and grabbed a knife.

Perez told deputies he grabbed the knife to end his life, but his son stopped him and took the knife away from him.

Deputies say Perez told them that he would have killed his wife if no one was there to stop him, but could not explain why he had the urge to do so.

The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and Perez was booked into the Alachua County Jail.
