COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - People down south are preparing for Beryl and the trail of damage it’s expected to leave behind. With the storm expected to reach Texas Monday morning, American Red Cross of South Carolina is now sending down trained volunteers, that hope to help those who may need it the most.

Food, water, and toiletries are some of the essentials volunteers Mike Scott and Kimberly Gonzalez hope to provide people in San Antonio who might bear the brunt of Beryl.

Scott and Gonzalez are two of eleven volunteers from American Red Cross of South Carolina headed Texas to help, where they hope to conduct mobile feeding in impacted communities.

“They’ll have shelters down there but nobody everybody can fit in the shelters. Sometimes these neighborhoods get hard hit and this truck needs to go in there and bring them food,” Scott said, “This could happen down in Charleston, and we would need the same help down there, so that’s how the Red Cross works.”

Scott and Gonzalez are part of the American Red Cross’ relief operation, that has hundreds of volunteers bringing aid for people in the storm’s projected path.

While Gonzalez said this is the first time she’s been a part of an operation like this, she feels volunteers coming from all over the country to help will have a far reach in a time when thousands will need it.

“Doesn’t matter if I’m in South Carolina or I’m in another state,” Gonzalez said, “I think, it just brings in that unity, and that mission of us being there to support people in their time of need.”

Gonzalez and Scott said they plan to stop somewhere in Alabama to get some rest during their long drive down south.
