Man accused of choking woman sleeping in bed after breaking into Myrtle Beach apartment

A man is behind bars after he allegedly broke into an apartment in Myrtle Beach and choked a woman sleeping in her bed.

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - A man is behind bars after he allegedly broke into an apartment in Myrtle Beach and choked a woman sleeping in her bed.

Edgar Cruz-Velasco, 45, faces first-degree assault and battery, first-degree burglary and kidnapping.

Myrtle Beach police were called on Sunday to Carolina Breeze Apartments and Townhomes located on Cedar Street.

Cruz-Velasco allegedly broke into a unit during the night and found the victim sleeping in her bed. He climbed on top of her, began choking her, and then groped the victim, according to arrest warrants.

A police report states that the victim was able to let out a scream which woke up her cousin who was sleeping upstairs.

According to the report, the cousin came downstairs and saw the suspect attacking the victim and that’s when the victim ran from the home.

The cousin was able to tell police that the suspect got away in a white pick-up truck and drove toward 3rd Avenue South.

The police report shows officers located Cruz-Velasco hours later at 1400 Highway 15 and placed him under arrest.

He currently remains at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center under a $250,000 bond.
