COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - District 22, one of the key races in Tuesday’s primary contest, will be headed into a runoff as two candidates are locked in a tight race.

The seat is currently being held by state Senator Mia McLeod, who decided not to seek reelection.

The three candidates vying for McLeod’s seat include current state representative Dr. Ivory Thigpen, Richland County Councilman Overture Walker, and Richland Two School Board Member Dr. Monica Elkins.

According to SC Votes, Thigpen and Walker will be headed for the runoff race, being the two leading candidates in terms of votes.

Thigpen is leading the race with 43% of the vote. However, Walker is right behind, tallying 40%. Elkins, who won’t be eligible for the June 25 runoff, trailed significantly, with just 17% of the vote.

No Republican filed for the race, so the winner of this contest will face Gary Votour, a candidate from the Workers Party, in November.
