COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - The Columbia wine bar Lula Drake won a James Beard award on Monday night.

Lula Drake, which is located on Main Street, won the award for Outstanding Wine and Other Beverages Program.

The awards were livestreamed by Eater on Monday night.

Other James Beard finalists for this year from the Midlands include Kitwanda “Kiki” Cyrus and Tyrone Cyrus of Kiki’s Chicken and Waffles and Robbie Robinson of City Limits Barbeque.

The Lula Drake wine parlor is named after a real woman, who’s portrait is behind the wine bar when you walk in.

The bar owners found a trunk of her belongings in the basement when they purchased the property that they found dating back to the 1920s. A letter they found is also printed on the side of the bar’s wall.

Lula Drake owned her own hat shop “in a business world dominated by men,” according to the wine parlor’s website.

The James Beard Awards is a non-profit that gives out prestigious awards to restaurants across the country, according to their website.
