COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - The South Carolina chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association is spreading awareness of the disease and gearing up for a special fundraiser.

The Ride to End ALZ is an annual 255-mile group bike ride from the South Carolina foothills in the Upstate to the Charleston coast. The ride is three days long and will raise money to fund Alzheimer’s research.

The organization helps raise awareness about Alzheimer’s and dementia through multiple initiatives. In the South Carolina chapter, cyclists have been peddling for Alzheimer’s awareness since 2009.

The Alzheimer’s Association stated their fundraising goal for the 2024 ride is $1.5 million. It takes place from July 12 to July 14.

South Carolina has a unique advantage when it comes to Alzheimer’s awareness, as it is one of only four states in the United States to have a statewide Alzheimer’s disease registry. Despite this fact, the state is also the third largest neurology desert in the nation, meaning South Carolina does not have many neurologists who are readily accessible.

Most recently, the University of South Carolina and Prisma Health expanded its treatment center for Alzheimer’s and dementia to Sumter.

Orangeburg County, in particular, is ranked eighth in the nation for Alzheimer’s prevalence.
