COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Health officials are seeking to spread information that could save a life as CPR/AED Awareness Week returns.

CPR stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation, an emergency procedure that can save the life of someone whose breathing or heartbeat has stopped. AED stands for automated external defibrillator, an electronic device that can stop cardiac arrhythmia and help re-establish a steady heartbeat.

The American Red Cross states over 1,600 people suffer from cardiac arrest each day. Health officials note that every second counts when these life-threatening events happen.

The Red Cross uses CPR/AED Awareness Week to encourage the public to get CPR-certified or take other classes on what to do during emergencies. They said knowledge of CPR can double or triple someone’s chance of surviving.
