COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Summer is approaching, meaning community pools are starting to open across the region.

But having fun in the water comes with serious responsibility.

According to the CDC, an average of 3,500 to 4,000 people drown per year in the United States. That’s an average of ten fatal drownings per day. With that in mind, it’s important to be safe in the water.

Coach Jamal Smith, owner and head instructor of Carolina Blue Waves Swim Club, dropped by WIS Sunrise Thursday morning here to share some safety tips.

Carolina Blue Waves offers a competitive swim team and swim lessons for all ages. You can contact them by calling 803-567-2979 or by reaching out on their Facebook.
