COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - South Carolina was named the best state for military retirees for 2024 in a study by WalletHub.

In the study, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 28 indicators of retirement-friendliness for veterans, including the percentage of homeless veterans and veteran-owned businesses, housing affordability and the quality of VA hospitals.

“South Carolina is the best state for military retirees, in part because it has many policies in place to help veterans,” the study read.

The study credits S.C. for having the fourth-best VA hospitals in the country, the third-most hospitals per capita, the seventh-most veterans per capita and the fourth-most veteran owned businesses per capita.

The strong job market in the Palmetto State was also noted, as S.C. has the sixth-best job growth rate in the country.

Rounding out the top five states behind S.C. are Florida, Virginia, Maryland and North Dakota.

Meanwhile, the five worst states are Oregon, New Mexico, Vermont, District of Columbia and Nevada.
