COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - 70 years ago, the Briggs v. Elliott case out of Clarendon County was one of five cases that made up Brown v. Board of Education.

The landmark Supreme Court case ultimately ended segregation in public schools. Billie Jean Shaw sat down with organizers of a four-day celebration to commentate and educate the community about those who risked their safety for equal rights.

Briggs v. Elliott was a case that pioneered the end of segregation in schools across the nation. In February, during WIS’ Black History Month Special, “It Started Here,” Billie Jean Shaw traveled to Clarendon County to highlight the courageous efforts of the men and women who made the landmark case possible.

Billie Jean Shaw is joined by Dr. Rev. Nelson Rivers, Sandra Williams and Moses Levy, the organizers of the four-day event in Clarendon County to celebrate 70 years of Briggs v. Elliott.

The conversation continued with the organizers of the celebrations of the 70th anniversary of Briggs v. Elliott. They explained why they’re dedicating four days to celebrate the pioneers of integration in classrooms across the nation.
