CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Friends and loved ones gathered at Joint Base Charleston to welcome home dozens of Airmen this weekend.

Fifty-five Airmen returned to Charleston Saturday after a six-month deployment to Kuwait, according to Joint Base Charleston.

Officials said Joint Base Charleston served as the lead wing from October 2023 to April 2024 at Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait.

The Airmen were greeted by team members and family equipped with signs and ready for hugs.

This was the first-ever execution and operationalization of the Air Force Force Generation, or AFFORGEN, deployment model. Joint Base Charleston officials said the deployment model was designed to improve Air Force readiness. The model is to show capabilities the service can provide through a 24-month rotation cycle broken into four, six-month phases.
