COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs shares tips with WIS on how to stay safe and prevent security breaches, and threats of identity theft.

A recent report from the SCDCA states that numbers of consumers affected by security breaches have more than tripled since 2023.

The department said 3,259,740 consumers and 139 businesses were affected by breaches compared to 976,427 consumers and 86 businesses in 2022.

The financial sector reported the most breaches in 2023 with over 1,500,000 affected customers. The health industry was the second largest reporting category, and the hospitality industry was the third, according to the report.
