FORT STEWART, Ga. (WTOC) -The President of Poland marked the country’s 25th anniversary of joining NATO with a visit to Fort Stewart Wednesday.

Welcomed by cannon fire and lines of 3rd ID soldiers, the NATO leader toured parts of Fort Stewart for several hours Wednesday afternoon.

A major told WTOC over 4,000 troops from this base have been sent to his part of the country, so this trip was an opportunity to see where they’ve come from.

After making it to this armor range, Polish President Andrzej Duda was shown the full capabilities of the 3rd Infantry Division.

From Abrams battle tanks, to Apache Helicopters and more live-fire in-between, President Duda paid close attention to weapons he says his country will be receiving, thanks to a recent deal with the U.S.

“This is something that is going to strengthen our military potential exponentially and I am glad to say that,” said President Andrzej Duda, Poland.

He says this equipment will help modernize his country’s military altogether seeing the true power of it on this range. The president also had a direct message for the troops from our area that have been serving in his overseas.

“Thank you for being in Poland. Thank you for guarding our security,” said Duda.

One of the 3rd ID leaders saying those words along with the Poland president’s time... mean the world.

“He has spent time with the units forward and so to have him here to spend time with the soldiers back here that are currently training and building readiness... it was incredible,” said Brig. Gen. Jeremy Wilson, 3rd ID, Fort Stewart.

The Polish President says this was the last stop on his U.S. trip and he’ll be in Brussels tomorrow to meet with a NATO leader and debrief on everything he saw.
