Chaplain candidate student passes away at Fort Jackson

The chaplain candidate student was national guard. They were running in formation when they collapsed, officials said.

FORT JACKSON, S.C. (WIS) - A chaplain candidate student passed away at Fort Jackson while attending the Institute for Religious Leadership, according to the Army post.

A spokesperson for Fort Jackson confirmed the person — who was a soldier in the National Guard — collapsed during a formation run and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The post said more information will be given about the National Guardsman after their next of kin is notified.

It’s common practice for the Army and other military branches to identify deceased service members 24-hours after next of kin notification.
