Beryl now tropical depression, moves away from Texas after destructive landfall as hurricane
After leaving a path of destruction across the Caribbean, Hurricane Beryl officially made landfall in the United States, the National Hurricane Center said early Monday morning.Now a tropical depression, Beryl is making its way through the Midwestern United States. According to the NHC, Beryl made landfall near Matagorda, Texas around 5 a.m. EST on Monday after strengthening into a Category 1 hurricane.Just after 11 a.m., Beryl was downgraded to a tropical storm before becoming the tropical depression that remains on Tuesday. Last week, Beryl started as an extremely catastrophic Category 5 hurricane — the earliest storm of that intensity in history. Right before slamming into Jamaica, Beryl was downgraded to a Category 4.The storm moved past the Cayman Islands and made landfall in Mexico at the end of last week before quickly weakening.
