What’s Standing Between Jessica Jones and Season 2?

The Netflix show is a critical success and a no-brainer for a renewal, but the story gets tricky from there.

Chances are you were either binge-listening to Adele’s new album or binge-watching Jessica Jones this past weekend—or maybe even both! While it could be years before we get another hit record from the British singer, the boss of Netflix’s new superhero drama is teasing a second season—but we might have to wait longer than expected to see it.

Jessica Jones was first announced as one of four solo Marvel series, as well as a Defenders mini-series. As we’ve seen with Daredevil and other successful Netflix original series, it’s difficult to pass up further seasons. Though the Krysten Ritter–led run premiered this weekend, it’s hard to imagine Jessica Jones won’t follow suit. However, the impending Defenders team-up could throw a chink in the scheduling chain.

The Hollywood Reporter asked show-runner Melissa Rosenberg about the potential for a second season, to which she replied, “I hope so. There certainly is storytelling wise. The question becomes is there actual time? There are logistics involved, because Defenders has to shoot by a certain time, contractually. Actually, I'm not sure; I'm not at all involved in those conversations, much to my dismay. The first question is whether or not we will even get a second season. The second question is, if so, when? Will it be before The Defenders or after? I'd certainly love it to be before but there are things that play into that—time, availability.”

It, at least, seems as though there’s plenty of time to fit the boozy brawler before The Defenders. There’s already a teaser out there for next year’s Daredevil Season 2, Luke Cage is filming now in New York City, and they still need to dish out an Iron Fist before The Defenders comes to fruition. Should Marvel and Netflix move as swiftly on Jessica Jones as they did with “the man with no fear,” production could get underway for, perhaps, a late 2016/early 2017 release.

In the meantime, perhaps you can make a drinking game for when you re-watch. If it has anything to do with Jessica Jones, it has to involve whiskey.
