The Student Commons

A place to be when you need somewhere to study, meet, relax, or socialize.

The Student Commons is open to students!

We know students are having a hard time finding places to touch down around St. George campus. Space is hard to find. The colder weather will only make it more challenging.

So the UTSU has opened its new Student Commons building to you.

The Student Commons is a new place for students at the corner of College and Huron Streets, right next to the Bookstore (230 College to be exact). The interiors aren’t finished and most of our programs aren’t being offered yet, but we want to help out by opening our doors and giving you the space you need.

We have several floors of open spaces, seating areas and meeting rooms with WiFi throughout the building. Essential staffing is in place to help where we can. A limited number of students (355) are permitted inside at once (25 per cent capacity). A range of pandemic protocols is also being enforced, including masking and distancing

Our first priority is the health and safety of our students and staff during this pre-opening, so there is always a chance that we may be forced to close our doors at any time.

We are so excited to see you at the Student Commons, your new home on campus!

When it’s done – in 2022 – the Student Commons will be a dynamic hub for students attending the St. George campus.

In addition to being a place to relax, socialize or study, students can find a club or group, access a number of services or simply get their questions answered. When we officially open, we’ll have a cafe where students can get a meal or a beverage.

The renovation of the interiors is underway for the first-ever student centre for all students attending classes on the St. George campus.

It will be a dynamic place.

Run by the students and staff of the University of Toronto Students’ Union (UTSU), your six-storey home-on-campus is easily accessible from across the campus or just off the College streetcar. You’ll enter from Huron Street.

Once you enter the building our friendly staff team will be ready to help at the welcome desk in the main floor lobby. There are several rooms and gathering areas where we’ll host a range of activities, a cafe (to come later) and lots more.

When will it be fully operational?

We’re getting there. Throughout 2022 the building will continue to be renovated, decorated and will gradually open for certain programs and services. We’re forecasting to have the full experience ready by next September.

We’re hard at work, creating spaces for you to get involved, study or just relax. Once complete, there will be university and student service groups sharing the building, as well as food, financial and wellness services and bookable space for groups and activities.

Our doors are open.

Under normal circumstances we wouldn’t be ready for you. But things aren’t normal, are they? So you’re welcome to use the building as a place to relax, socialize or study. There’s space to sit or meet. There’s WiFi. Essential staff will be on hand to help where we can. When it makes sense, we will move the full UTSU into new offices in the building. We just hope you can be patient with us as we continue to make the finishing touches and get everything up and running.

Watch this space and follow our social media channels for updates as they happen.
