Part one of Kevin Costner's Horizon: An American Saga hit theaters last month.

The film, which follows interconnected stories in the American West during the Civil War, will be divided into multiple chapters. (Part two premieres on August 16, and Costner is working on the third installment now.) Per the official description, Horizon "explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won — and lost — through the blood, sweat and tears of many. Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America."

Costner, who self-financed Horizon, is fascinated by this time period. "If we can just close our eyes and go back, realize how hard it was because you were going west, but you were also coming up against people who had lived there for thousands of years and didn’t want to let go of it," he told CNN. "And so you had no law out there. There was nothing to really protect you. The only thing that was taking you out there was this appetite in America that if you were strong enough and bold enough, you could hold onto something if you were willing to actually defend."

In addition to writing and directing the film, Costner stars in the movie, alongside Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Ella Hunt, Will Patton, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Thomas Haden Church, Tatanka Means, Michael Rooker, Jamie Campbell Bower, Own Crow Shoe, Jeff Fahey, Danny Huston, Glynn Turman, Kathleen Quinlan, and Giovanni Ribisi.

Part two was expected to be in theaters in August, but now that has been delayed after a disappointing theatrical release. "Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema have decided not to release Horizon: Chapter 2 on August 16 in order to give audiences a greater opportunity to discover the first installment of Horizon over the coming weeks, including on PVOD and Max. We thank our exhibition partners for their continued support as moviegoers across the U.S. discover the film in its theatrical run," a New Line spokesperson said, per Hollywood Reporter.
