Robert Fico

Robert Fico is the current and longest-serving prime minister of Slovakia. He first ventured into politics in the 1980s, becoming a member of the ruling Communist party and then established the left-wing nationalist Smer party in 1999. A populist, Fico is governing in his third premiership. He first became prime minister in 2006 and was re-elected in 2012 when the ruling coalition at the time collapsed. He resigned in 2018 amid public anger over the murder of the investigative reporter Jan Kuciak. He began his third premiership in 2023. In May 2024 he was injured in a shooting in Handlova while meeting supporters after a government meeting.
