Republican Party

The Republican Party is one of the two major political parties in the United States, opposite the Democratic Party. It is also referred to as the Grand Old Party (GOP) and “the right”. The party was founded in 1854 and Abraham Lincoln became the first Republican to win the presidency in 1861. The Republican Party advocates for conservative policies including assertive national security, laissez-faire economics, increased military spending and loosened gun ownership laws. It also largely supports restricting the legality of abortion and overturning the legality of same-sex marriages. There have been 19 presidents from the Republican Party including Theodore Roosevelt, who implemented the Social Security Act of 1935, Ronald Reagan and George W Bush. The last Republican president was Donald Trump who led the party from 2017 to 2021.
