Germany, officially known as the Federal Republic of Germany, is a country in the western part of Central Europe. A region named Germania was first documented before AD100 and was inhabited by various Germanic tribes dating as far back as classical antiquity. Today it is the second most-populated country in Europe after Russia and its capital, Berlin, is its most populous city. Germany has the world’s fourth-largest GDP and is a global power in industrial, scientific and technological sectors. The current chancellor is Olaf Scholz who took over after Angela Merkel in 2021.
