Democratic Unionist Party

The Democratic Unionist Party is a unionist, national conservative political party in Northern Ireland. It was founded by Ian Paisley during The Troubles in 1971. He led the party for 37 years. It sits centre-right and, as Ulster unionists, supports Northern Ireland being part of the United Kingdom in opposition to a united Ireland. Gavin Robinson is currently the interim leader. It is Eurosceptic and opposes LGBT rights, same-sex marriage in Northern Ireland and abortion rights. It also favours retaining a triple-lock pension and some of its members have previously called for creationism to be taught in state schools.
