D-Day

Operation Neptune was a military landing on the coast of Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944. It marked the start of the Allied invasion of Europe to liberate France and led to the end of the Second World War. D-Day is a military term referring to the specific day of a planned operation and means “Day-Day” or "the day". Bad weather delayed the invasion by 24 hours and a further delay would have meant waiting at least two weeks for the right conditions. About 156,000 soldiers from Britain and the Commonwealth, the United States and other Allies landed on the Normandy beaches: 195,700 naval personnel on almost 7,000 vessels. It remains the biggest seaborne invasion in history.
