Conservative Party

The Conservative Party is a political party in the United Kingdom. First formed in 1834 by Robert Peel, today it sits on the centre-right of the political spectrum. There have been 16 Conservative prime ministers since the beginning of the 20th century,  including Winston Churchill, Harold Macmillan and Margaret Thatcher. Since the end of the 1900s it has advocated liberal economic policies and British unionism. Modern Britain has been shaped by the party in the past 100 years through the privatisation of industry, the introduction of the right-to-buy scheme, the legalisation of same-sex marriage and the staging of the Brexit referendum, which led to the nation’s departure from the European Union in January 2020.
