Tucked away in the northwest corner of ETX lies Bonham State Park. This beautiful oasis offers an abundance of opportunities to experience the peaceful environment of nature for traveling families.

ESCAPE THE CITY

Park superintendent, Jason Schooley, shared with us that guests are usually visiting to find some rest from the everyday hustle and bustle. Here at Bonham, there are plenty of ways to slow down and enjoy creation.

As you pull into the park, you are quickly immersed within the thick forest. Making your way down the park’s main road you are then welcomed by a wide-open landscape, centered around the park’s lake. The view is magnificent! Carefully placed along the lake’s shores are a variety of 88-year-old stone buildings that make up an incredible courtyard. A wonderful meeting space for family fun and picnics.

At the end of the courtyard, there are a couple of docks where you can comfortably cast your rod or launch a rental paddle boat. Visitors can also bring their own kayak or canoe to hit the water with. Make your way around the lake for some more epic fishing spots, and maybe see the occasional beaver dam.

If hiking is more of your thing, Bonham offers about 9-miles of trails. We absolutely loved the Gnarly Root Trail. This beautiful curvy path through the trees offered tons of spectacular sights and sounds. Due to some recent heavy rainstorms, we got to see a few creatures that are normally quite shy, like tarantulas! These incredible arachnids didn’t pay us much mind, as they were busy trying to find themselves a new home. The friendly park rangers are more than happy to help you identify and learn more about all the critters at the park!

LARGE GROUP GATHERINGS

“We have a group tent area and one of the larger group facilities in our department.”

Bonham State Park is the perfect location for a family reunion or large group camping trip. The park offers a couple of great options for you and your crew. The Group Tent Area can host up to 50 campers. You get your own little portion of the park with plenty of space for huge cookouts, yard games, and resting underneath the stars.

The Group Hall is a great selection if you’re looking to host things like a small summer camp or multi-family gathering. This location can hold up to 94 guests and includes a fully commercial-grade kitchen. With multiple dorms, basketball court, outdoor pavilion, and tons of space all to yourself, it’s an awesome atmosphere to connect with those you care about the most.
